Parking restrictions proposed outside village school

PARKING restrictions could be introduced near Laleham Primary School in response to residents' fears that cars parked during the school rush hours will cause an accident.

Complaints from neighbours have prompted Surrey County Council to consider introducing waiting restrictions on parking 'in the vicinity' of the school, on The Broadway.

Residents say every available parking space or empty stretch of pavement gets filled with cars when parents drop their children off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon.

Barry Emms, who lives on The Broadway close to the school, said he has had to ask parents to move their cars in order to get out of his own driveway.

He said: "This village was not built for all this traffic. The car park opposite my house is full on both sides and in the centre at school times, there's just not enough room.

"Parents also park on the pavement, and with the speed the gravel lorries go down here, there will be an accident."

Cars and ambulances going to and from Glebe House, a care home for the elderly, also suffer from the parked cars.

Manager Caroline Walker, said: "When we try and pull out of here it is very difficult to see around the cars.
"Our ambulance drivers have said the same thing. It's an accident waiting to happen.

"Sometimes you are worried you are going to get smashed. I do think something should be done."

Surrey County Council could not confirm where and when parking restrictions will be enforced, but confirmed they will make the details public later this year.

A council spokesman said: "The proposals for the waiting restrictions are going to be in the vicinity of the school, in response to local residents who had issues regarding the parking around school time.

"The proposals will be advertised by public notice around October."

It might help if the white lines were repainted in the car park opposite the school as no-one seems to know how to park in one space. At lunchtime today there was space for at least another 5 cars.
The school is trying to ease congestion in the mornings by getting parents to drop children off and then leave, rather than wait around for the school bell.
