Green-fingered children at Buckland Primary School were busy planting bulbs as part of a Big Green Day on Monday October 20.

The Staines school also hosted a green poetry competition, a school litter pick, a recycled materials art, an eco fashion show and other gardening.

When Ann and John Betteridge married at St Mary's Church in Stanwell 50 years ago, hula-hooping was all the craze.

And even though Ann had never done the hula before, she was game for a laugh and had a go in her wedding dress for a national newspaper to capture the trend in a photo.

Individuals and voluntary organisations are invited to nominate people for a Spelthorne Civic Award for their dedication to the community.

Nominated people must have given voluntary service to the community for at least 12 years.

Trustees of the Spelthorne Civic Trust, which will present the awards, will meet in November and again in Febrary 2009 to consider the nominations.

Nomination forms are available from the Trust Secretary Carol Davies on 01784 255432.

The closing date for nominations is January 31 2009.

The next area forum for Stanwell residents will be on Tuesday November 4 in Stanwell Moor Village Hall in Horton Road.

Householders are invited to meet their councillors between 7pm and 9pm and express their views on issues and concerns in their neighbourhood.

Spelthorne Natural History Society will meet to help conserve Laleham Pond in Ashford Road on October 26.

Volunteers will clear unwanted plants and plant bluebell bulbs from 10am.

Thameside Art Group will hold an Autumn Art Exhibition on Saturday October 18 from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

The exhibition will be held at St Peter's Church Hall in Laleham Road, Staines, and Mayor of Spelthorne Cllr Simon Bhadye will be visiting at noon.
