A talk on the gardens of Japan will take place at the next meeting of the Thames Valley Horticultural Society.

Speaker Bob Calder will give the talk at Christ Church Hall, in Kenilworth Gardens at 7.45pm.

Visitors admission cost is £1.

A talk will take place on Tuesday January 26 at the next meeting of Laleham Women's Institute.

Mary Falenxa will speak about her 'whistle stop tour of Italy' with slides.

Visitors are welcome at the Village Hall, in The Broadway.

Four Staines Town supporters were arrested and detained by the Metropolitan police on Wednesday December 9 during the second leg of the FA Cup game with Millwall.

Fans posting on the Staines Town internet forum described seeing a few Staines fans making 'cut throat' gestures to the Millwall fans, before they were approached by the stewards.

Everyone was in high spirits as I walked into the Thames Club at 4.45pm and got on one of the coaches.

Strangers and friends alike were talking enthusiastically through the rush hour traffic to The Den, with fans singing the club's customary 'yellow and blue' chant.

More than £2000 has been raised for a charity by Staines Rotary Club.

The RAF Association President's Band performed at St Peter's Church, in Laleham Road in late November, which also saw more than £1000 raised for the band's charity, and Rotary International.

Daybreak are a charity who support people suffering from long-term illnesses.

Staines Brass Band will be performing two concerts on the run up to Christmas.

The band will be performing a sing-along carol concert at The Old Red Lion in Leacroft, Staines, at 9pm on Tuesday 15, followed by their annual Christmas concert in St Peter's Church, in Laleham Road on Thursday 17.

Tickets for the second event are £7 on the door.

Staines Town Chairman Alan Boon said he will pay for coaches to the second round of the FA Cup against Millwall if fans turn up to a league game against Basingstoke Town on Saturday December 5.

The gesture comes after Staines drew with the League One side Millwall on Saturday November 28 in Wheatsheaf Park, which saw around 3000 people turn up to see the teams draw 1-1.

Staines Town FC have drawn with Millwall in the second round of the FA Cup.

The score was 1-1 at full time today (28), which means the teams will play each other again at Millwall's ground, The Den, at a later date.

Despite worries from Wheatsheaf Lane residents on possible trouble from fans down their road, the game went off without a hitch.

One Wheatsheaf Lane resident said: "It was such a good game, and Staines deserved to win. They were the stronger team.

"I must admit I was concerned at first, because we were getting assurance calls from the police, but nothing happened. Millwall did themselves proud.

"The police and the club did such a good job of organising everything."

Staines got into the Christmas cheer early over the weekend when real reindeer visited the High Street.

The annual Christmas parade took place in the High Street on Saturday (22) at the same time that St Peter's Nursery hosted a party in St Peter's Church, in Laleham Road.

The RAF President's band will be entertaining people at a Staines Rotary Club event later on Saturday November 21.

The club are holding a charity concert to raise money for Daybreak, who support people suffering from long-term illnesses and health problems.
